60/40 portfolio
The 60/40 portfolio is the classic balanced mix: 60% stocks for growth and 40% bonds for stability. It needs only two funds, which makes rebalancing with new money especially simple.

Good to know
- Simple to hold and to explain; a long-standing benchmark for balanced investors.
- Swings less than an all-stock portfolio, at the cost of usually lower long-term returns.
- A global stock fund such as VT can replace VTI for international exposure in a single fund.
Keeping it on target with each contribution
- Open the template in the calculator and enter how many shares of each fund you own.
- Press Update prices, or type in the current prices.
- Enter how much you want to invest and press Calculate.
- Place the listed orders with your broker, then press Save New Positions.
New money goes to the funds that are below target, so the portfolio moves back toward its mix without selling anything.
